Choosing a Set of Golf Clubs for You

As the game of golf has increased over the years, so has the creation of the golf club. With so many varieties to choose from, finding the perfect set for you should be fairly simple. Yet for many this is one of the hardest things to do, especially for beginners of the game. A good golf club set is vital to insuring that you play the best game you possibly can. There are four standard types of golf clubs. They are Woods, Irons, Wedges, and Putters. So what makes each golf club unique? Well, let’s look at each one a little closer:

Woods – This golf club is typically used to hit long shots. Normally these would be club numbers 1, 3, and 5 in your set. Your “driver” club is normally a wood club. You will normally have your driver club and then two additional fairway clubs.

Irons – Iron clubs are golf clubs that are used when you generally want to hit the ball between 125 and 200 feet on the course. The lower the number on the iron, the farther the ball will travel. The two most common irons used in the game are the 3 iron and the 9 iron.

Wedges – Wedges are used for shorter shots. You would use a wedge for instance in a sand pit. They are ideal for getting out of difficult situations like the sand pits because you simply want a short shot from the sand pit to get the ball back on the fairway.

Putters – The putter is a golf club that is typically used when you are right outside the green or on the green to get the ball in the hole. This is typically a shorter club than all the others. These are used to get the ball to “roll” farther. It is not designed to sail the ball through the air.

Gold clubs vary just as the players of the game vary. Each player has their own style when it comes to playing golf. Therefore you want your golf clubs to be customized to you. If you were over 6’ tall you wouldn’t be able to use the same size golf clubs as those of someone who is barely 5’4”. You also need to vary your golf clubs if you are left handed versus right handed. When choosing a set for yourself, take your time. Test the club at the store. Does it feel comfortable to swing it? Does the flow feel normal for you or are you struggling to maintain a good stance? A good golf club should make your playing the game seem effortlessly. Now this is not to say that getting a good set of clubs is going to insure that you are the next Arnold Palmer but it will make it easier for you to get into the groove of the game. Take a look at the golf clubs offered at various outlets. Don’t rush into getting the first set you see or buy a set just because it is on sale. This should be an investment in your love of the game. Happy hunting.
